Chapter Ten

Carolyn carried the tray with the coffee onto the patio. She put the tray on the table and sat in one of the chaise lounges. She picked up one of the cups; the other two were for Charlie and Allan. They had sent her up to the widow's walk while they prepared their surprise dessert.

She thought about the day she had spent on the boat with Molly and about the lunch Molly had prepared. She had told Charlie and Allan about it and they had chortled. Allan said that Molly never cooked and that Carolyn should consider the small feast a flirtation lunch.

Carolyn wasn't so sure. She had flirted, but Molly seemed distant.

"Here we go, love," Charlie said as he carried the flaming dessert onto the patio. Allan was grinning behind him.

"What is it?" Carolyn exclaimed.

"Cherries jubilee. One of our favorites." He set it down and took

one of the bowls Allan was carrying. He spooned the ice cream and cherries into the bowl. The small blue flame danced in the evening sea breeze. "Blow," he told Carolyn. She blew the flame out and watched as a small line of smoke floated into the air.

Allan also blew his out.

"Don't you just love this dessert?" Charlie said as he blew his out. "It has both showmanship and color."

"It's delicious," Carolyn said as she blew on the dessert to cool it. She paused, her spoon in the air. "Allan, can I ask you a question?"

"Of course."

"Who's Tommy?"

Allan glanced at Charlie. "Did Molly mention him today?"

"No, Kevin did. When I told him I was an attorney, Kevin asked me if I was here to help Tommy. Molly changed the subject."

"He's her brother." Allan looked to Charlie for help.

"Tommy has had some problems lately," Charlie said carefully. "Legal problems."

"As in ... ?"

"Drugs," Charlie said thoughtfully. "Bad drugs."

"Was he arrested?"

"A couple of weeks ago. He's out on bail. Staying with Auntie Em," Allan added.

"That explains a lot, I hope."

"What do you mean?" Charlie asked.

"Well, I've been flirting with this woman and she has been about as responsive as the lobsters she catches. In fact, they're more responsive. At least they wave their claws in the air when confronted."

Allan smiled. "You have to know Molly."

"Well, you can't say I haven't tried. I went over to see her the night before I left. I spent today on her boat. I am going to see her tomorrow. What do I have to do, send her flowers and a singing telegram telling her I like her?"

Allan laughed. "Molly is wonderful but very reluctant to put her feelings on the line."

"I agree." Charlie picked up the thread. "She's reticent when it comes to expressing her emotions. She's known Allan almost her entire life, yet I've never once heard her tell him she loves him. Yet she does." He poured more coffee for himself. He held the pot out to Carolyn, but she shook her head no.

"That's true. I will give her a hug and tell her I love and adore her, and she blushes," Allan added.
